OPAC

An OPAC (On-line Public Access Catalogue) is the on-line version of the normal catalogue of a library. Often, integrated library automation systems (ILS) include a specific module for this function. When this is not present, it is possible to manage an autonomous system, which allows the publication of the catalogue on-line, typically on the web.

A set of the main software packages suitable for the management of an OPAC and distributed in Italy is available on the website of the AIB (Associazione Italiana biblioteche - Italian Association of Libraries).

CILEA offers the management in outsourcing of OPAC systems, with activities and services similar to those offered for LMSs. Moreover, it is possible to request a service for the periodical update of the OPAC database, by importing data from external cataloguing systems.

CILEA has developed its own OPAC software, called PICO, using several open source modules based on the CDS/ISIS technology by Unesco (wwwisis, clabel, IsisGas, LI_a). Such system is particularly interesting as it guarantees good functionalities, it does require the payment of licenses and can be customised according to the needs of the customer.

CILEA has also customised the EasyWeb software, in order to allow the connection to METALIB with the protocol Z39.50, by using the open source software Cheshire II.

Presently, CILEA manages the following OPACs:
