The new cluster has been installed in the last days of March and will be operative after a few weeks of testing and tuning. The new server increases the computing power offered to supercomputing users at CILEA.
The new cluster is provided by Hewlett Packard. It is composed by 208 nodes with blade technology, with 2 processors Intel Xeon QuadCore 3.166GHz and with 2 GB of RAM for core (a total of 1664 cores with 3.3 TB of RAM). The nodes are interconnected by Infiniband system 4X Double Data Rate with capacity of 20 Gb/s.
The total peak power approaches 22 TFlop/s (thousands of billions of Floating point operations per second). According to the last Top500 (November 2007), that enumerates the most powerful computers in the world, CILEA places itself near the 60th position. With this acquisition CILEA confirms itself among the most important european supercomputing center.
As previously happened with the other clusters, the name of the new server is dedicated to the memory of one of the greatest italian representative of science history. The new cluster is named "Lagrange" in honour of Joseph-Louis Lagrange (1736-1813), one of the most relevant mathematicians of XVIII century.
