Press Conference: LAGRANGE the new supercluster at CILEA

By: a cura della Direzione CILEA
Last 25th June 2008 a Press Conference was held at the State
University of Milan in order to officially present Lagrange, the
Hewlett Packard supercomputer recently acquired by CILEA in
cooperation with University of Milan, Milan-Bicocca, Pavia, Bergamo, Brescia and Polytechnic of Milan.

CILEA recently put a new supercomputer on-line to increase its offer
to users in the high performance computing field.

It is a cluster provided by Hewlett Packard equipped by 208 dual-proc
blade nodes with Intel Xeon 3.166 Ghz quadcore cpus and 2 GB RAM per
core (1664 cores; 3,3 TB RAM total). Nodes are interconnected with
a Infiniband 4X Double Data Rate network capable of 20 Gb/s.

The total peak performance approaches 22 TFlop/s (thousands of
billions of floating point operations per second). The system entered
the latest TOP500 list, which enumerates the 500 most powerful
computers in the world, at the 135th position. With this acquisition
CILEA confirms itself as one of the most relevant entities in
european supercomputing.

Following a long-standing tradition CILEA supercomputing systems are
dedicated to major italian scientists of the past. The new cluster
was named after the mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange (1736-1813).
